X Men: Days of Future Past- a review

3.5/5

Okay, before we go any further, let me tell you that I am not a Bryan Singer X Men person. I thought his X men movies were okay, not exceptional.I liked Origin Wolverine, I loved First Class but I watched X 1 and 2, maybe with no regret. I know that there is a particular group for Singer's X men adaptation but I am not a member of that.

Given my opinion about his previous movies, I was not exactly expectant of this one. But I gotta give it to the movie: with its mediocre story, though it did not sweep me off my feet, it definitely did exceed my expectation.

What I loved:
1. Star studded cast.
2. Theme music retained from X Men First class.
3. Not so cheesy adaptation as that of Avengers.
4. Entertaining, gripping at quite a number of places.
5. Michael Fassbender.

What I didn't like:
1. Cliche ending with the POTUS.
2. For some reason, Wolverine didn't seem to convince that he was the man for the job.
3. Magneto turning the sentinels to work for him by pushing in some rail tracks. Really?
4. Breaking into Pentagon seemed so effortless (of course, except the slow motion sequence that got applause in the theatre. It reminded me of a similar sequence in Over the Hedge though).
5. Sentinel design was an eye sore.
6. Though the story revolves around him, Peter Dinklage didn't have much scope for acting. Sad.
7. Too many people.

The cast is both the plus and minus for the movie: too many awesome actors, with no significant role. Even Wolverine didn't make an impression. When I saw Halle Berry, I expected her to have a more significant role: but just took consolation in the fact that she did more than Famke Jansson and James Marsden.

One best thing was retaining the theme music. Not just this, but Bryan Singer has actually taken a lot of good things from First Class and made this one a proper sequel of it. Earned my respect.

The storyline is a little too convoluted and doesn't establish itself well. Historical references like Vietnam War and JFK etc, doesn't exactly add to the story much.I just couldn't help but compare it with the World War beautifully intertwined with the First Class story.

We get to see some new cool X Men but again not pitched in well and hence kinda forgettable.

It was a good watch, definitely a must watch for X Men fans. But First Class is still the best of X Men movies.
